Your First Upwork Client
For beginners with zero reviews and no portfolio

Nobody's opening your proposals. Here's the 14-day fix.

You've sent 20, 30, 40 proposals. "Not viewed." Every job has 50 people on it, and half of them are pasting ChatGPT. I got my first Upwork clients anyway, by doing it the unconventional way. This is the exact day-by-day plan, for €7.

Be honest

Tick the ones that sound like you.

I've read hundreds of posts from people stuck on Upwork. They all say the same six things.

0/6 ticked

If you ticked even one, keep reading. That was me too. It's not you. It's the way everyone tells you to do it.

Quick maths

What has it cost you so far?

Slide to how many proposals you've sent with no reply.

30Proposals, no reply
480Connects gone
$72Spent for nothing

Based on 16 Connects a proposal at $0.15 each, the price when I wrote this. Some jobs cost less, some more.

This whole plan is €7. That's less than the Connects for 3 proposals. Except this tells you which 3 to send.

I did it the unconventional way

Everyone told me what to do. I did the opposite.

Tap each one to see what I did instead.

Everyone says“Write professional.”
What I did insteadI write like a voice note. “Hey Skye and team!! Damn I love this project.” Sounds wrong. Clients reply to it.
Everyone says“Niche down from day one.”
What I did insteadI took anything at first: data entry, translation, Canva, social media. Niche down once you've got reviews. Nobody picks the specialist with no proof.
Everyone says“Go for the good, well-paid jobs.”
What I did insteadI went for the small, fresh, short ones with under 5 proposals. The ones nobody bothers with. That's how you're proposal #3, not #53.
Everyone says“Open with “Dear Hiring Manager”.”
What I did insteadI use their first name. It's usually hiding in their past reviews. Tiny thing. Changed everything.
Everyone says“Just send more proposals.”
What I did insteadI sent fewer, way more personal ones, each with a small free test offer. Fewer Connects, more replies.
Everyone says“Upwork is all you need.”
What I did insteadI kept LinkedIn open at the same time, connecting like a friend, not pitching. My first real client actually came from there.

Unconventional, sure. But all of it plays by Upwork's rules. No hacks, no fake reviews, nothing that gets your account banned.

My receipts

I started with $5 jobs.

Real contracts from my Upwork history. I wasn't special. I just kept going after the small stuff, and the small stuff is what got me here.

The 14-day sprint

Two weeks. One goal.

Your first client and your first 5-star review. Every day has a job, so you're never sitting there staring at Upwork wondering what to do next.

Days 1–2

Set up

Fix your title, overview and rate. Make 2–3 samples in one afternoon, even with no clients. Open LinkedIn as your second door.

Done when: You'd hire yourself

Days 3–7

Apply every day

Small, fresh jobs, filters on. A few really personal proposals a day, each with a small free test. Follow and connect on LinkedIn.

Done when: Your first 10+ proposals are out

Days 8–11

Keep going

Keep sending. Reply within the hour, take quick calls, do small tests. Most first jobs are won right here.

Done when: First replies or calls

Days 12–14

Land it and deliver

Contract first, then work. Over-deliver, send a preview, ask for the review in the same message you deliver.

Done when: First client, first 5 stars

Day 5 or day 14, both count

What doesn't work is quitting on day 6.

Ten proposals with no reply is normal at the start. The plan expects it, so it doesn't knock you out.

What's inside the guide

37 pages. No fluff. Here's a taste.

Short on purpose. Read it once, then follow it day by day. Every step has a “just starting?” option for when you've got no reviews and nothing to show yet.

Page 22: the 10-second job check.

  • The 3 lines clients actually see before they decide to open your proposal, and why yours probably says “not viewed” (p.7)
  • Your first 60 minutes: set a timer and send proposal #1 tonight, not next week (p.5)
  • 5 opening lines that get clicked, with fill-in-the-blank versions for when you've got nothing to show (p.27)
  • Where the client's first name is hiding when the post doesn't show it. Sounds tiny. It changed everything for me (p.24)
  • The 10-second job check that stops you burning Connects on jobs you'll never win (p.22)
  • How to make 3 portfolio samples in one afternoon with zero clients, without lying about it (p.18)
  • The exact filters I use so you're proposal #3, not #53 (p.21)
  • A real proposal I sent, line by line, and the template version you can steal (p.26–28)
  • What to say when they reply, and what to say when they go quiet (p.30–31)
  • The Upwork rules that get beginners banned without knowing it. Read this twice (p.19)
  • The review message I'd send after your first job (p.32)
  • Day 14, still no client? The symptom table that tells you exactly what to fix for round two (p.33–34)
A free tip from step 05, yours to keep

Which one would you open?

Same beginner. Zero reviews, no portfolio. Two ways to say it.

The other 49
Dear Hiring Manager, I am writing to express my interest in this position. Although I am new to Upwork, I am a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual…
Like a person
Hey Mia! Saw you need your product sheet cleaned up before the launch, I can totally do that. No portfolio yet, so I made you a quick sample instead: [link]

The first one apologizes for being new before they even know your name. I sent that for months. Nothing. The second is still zero reviews, still no portfolio. But it sounds like a real person who read the post. That's when clients started replying.

Use it tonight, even if you don't buy. Then imagine 36 more pages of that.

Dove's Dog Academy · from my Upwork profile
This is for you if…
  • You're new on Upwork with zero reviews, or just a couple
  • Your proposals sit at “not viewed” and you don't know why
  • You've burned Connects and you're starting to doubt yourself
  • You've got a skill (social, design, editing, VA, writing, anything) and just need the first yes
  • You want a plan with a start date, not more “just be consistent”
Skip it if…
  • You already land clients regularly. This one's about the first.
  • You want a hack around Upwork's rules. Everything here plays by them.
  • You want clients without sending a single proposal. Not gonna happen, sorry.

One honest drawback: this isn't done-for-you. You still have to send the proposals. The plan just makes sure they're the right ones.

Who's writing this

Hey, I'm Sara.

I'm a Meta ads video editor and AI creative. I've been editing ads every day for 4+ years. Over $40K on Upwork alone.

But I didn't start there. My first jobs paid $5. No reviews, no plan, no clue. I sent proposals into the void too, and it took me way longer than it needed to. These days I can get a new client in about two weeks. The first one took forever, because I had no plan.

This is the plan.

Questions people ask me

Is Upwork even worth it anymore? Everyone says it's dead.
It's harder than it used to be, I won't lie. But I'm still getting hired there, my latest 5-star review is from this year. What's dead is the copy-paste proposal. That's what this fixes.
I've got zero reviews and no portfolio. Does this still work?
That's exactly who it's for. Every part of the profile setup has a “just starting?” option, and page 18 shows you how to make 3 labeled samples in one afternoon.
I've already wasted a bunch of Connects. Won't this make me spend more?
The opposite. The 10-second job check and the Connects budget are there so you only spend Connects on jobs you actually have a shot at. Fewer proposals, better ones.
Can't I just use ChatGPT?
You can. So can the other 50 people, that's the problem. The guide shows you what to change so it sounds like you.
What about fake jobs and scams?
Some posts are junk, yeah. The guide covers the red flags that mean “skip”, and the rules section keeps every chat and payment on Upwork, so your money and your review are protected.
Will I definitely land a client in 14 days?
Honestly, I can't promise that, nobody can. Some people land it on day 5, some on day 14, some need a second round. That's why there's a Day 14 check-in that shows you what to fix. And if it's not for you, there's the 14-day refund.
Is this only for video editors?
Not at all. My first jobs were data entry, social media and Canva. It works for any freelance skill on Upwork.
How much time do I need each day?
Days 1–2 are setup, so give those a proper block. After that it's 30–45 minutes a day: a few personal proposals plus a bit of LinkedIn.
What do I get, and how?
The guide (PDF), 13 printable worksheets (PDF) and your link to the Sprint HQ app. All of it lands in your inbox right after checkout.

You can keep sending proposals into the void. Or start the sprint tonight.

14 days, one client, one 5-star review. Nothing fancy. It just works if you actually do it.

Start my 14-day sprint · €7

P.S. Every week you keep doing it the old way is another 10 proposals and another €20-ish of Connects with nothing back. €7, 14 days, and a refund if it's not for you. That's the whole decision.

And when you land that first client, tell me. Seriously, I want to hear it. — Sara
